The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has unveiled not one but two initiatives centred on Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Announced separately, the initiatives include a free online learning course on personal lines insurance. Slated to go live on October 14, the four-week course will run three times a year.

According to the CII, anyone can visit the FutureLearn website to sign up. It added that the weekly content is equivalent to two hours of learning, which can count towards CPD.

“This online course is about building up a foundation knowledge of home, car, travel, and pet insurance,” stated CII chief executive Sian Fisher (pictured), who hopes both employers and employees will tap into the “great free resource” to further raise standards across the profession.

Meanwhile, the trade body has also rolled out the global mentoring platform “Connect,” which is designed to promote professional development and learning for insurance professionals at any stage of their careers.

Connect allows mentors and mentees to pair themselves up according to specific criteria such as skills and learning needs. The CII said mentoring can be undertaken depending on participants’ individual preferences, and both mentors and mentees may also be able to accumulate CPD hours for their involvement.

Commenting on the platform’s launch, Fisher said: “Connect presents an excellent opportunity for our members to access the broad and diverse range of skills and experience which exists within the insurance and financial protection community.

“No matter what stage of our career we are at, we can all benefit from the valuable experience our members have gained over many years within the profession. In bringing professionals together, Connect facilitates the sharing of knowledge and practical experience as part of the core soft skills which is often missing in a more technical-focused CPD environment.”
