Established in 1885 by Charles L. Crane, the Crane Agency is today the oldest independent insurance agency west of the Mississippi River. The agency got its start when Crane, the son of a steamboat captain, moved to St. Louis and began writing river marine insurance policies for barge owners traveling the Mississippi River. Today, the agency has grown to more than 250 employees and offers a number of value-added services, including claims consulting, quality control, marketing and risk management consulting, in addition to insurance solutions.
