This broker’s rising star is garnering national attention, thanks to a glowing submission from the 2011 Emerging Leader award winner.

“I was happy. When they called me to say that I had won, I was really happy to know that,” says Anne-Marie Deschenes, a marketer with Aon Risk Solutions in Montreal, Que. “There was a lot of hard work putting together the submission for me. I am so thankful for all the effort, in particular to Simon Charbonneau.”

The submission to the Chartered Insurance Professionals’ Society on behalf of Deschenes was put together by Charbonneau, the specialty insurance senior underwriter at Chubb Canada.

Charbonneau won the Emerging Leader award in 2011 while with AXA Canada Inc.

The CIP awards were created to recognize achievement in the property and casualty professional fields, recognizing individuals whose personal qualities exemplify leadership through their passion for learning, their dedication to their profession and commitment to their employer.

The CIP defines leaders as role models and mentors who demonstrate a natural ability to positively influence the people around them and cultivate leadership qualities in others; admired by peers, and deemed to be a person of high personal integrity. (continued.)

“The society is pleased to have played a role supporting these industry leaders,” says Peter Hohman, president and CEO of the CIP, “who are role models and mentors, energize and inspire others, and enrich their organizations and their communities.”

Included in the category of Emerging Leaders with Deschenes were Lindsay Mackenzie, a commercial lines manager of Intact Insurance of Mississauga and Tammie Norn, CEO of ProFormance Group Inc. in Pickering.

The two winners of the Established Leader category were Ginny Bannerman, vice president of Finance West, Intact Insurance in Calgary, and James Cameron, president of Cameron & Associates Insurance Consultants of Toronto.

Deschenes started her career in the industry at a small brokerage firm, managing new business. Enjoying her experience but interested in working for a bigger employer, she joined Aon in 2007 as an assistant manager, small to medium-sized companies accounts/new business development in the company’s business insurance department.

Since joining Aon, she has been promoted to the role of marketer, medium to large-sized companies.

But it is evident that Deschenes’ passion is working with L'Association de la relève en assurance du Québec (LARAQ), and introducing young people to the insurance industry. (continued.)

“I’m really involved in LARAQ, an association for the young people,” says Deschenes. “We need to get more youth involved in insurance. The young people should know more about the industry; it is a beautiful industry, and we need the young people to help it grow.”

According to the submission from Charbonneau, Deschenes has a natural ability to motivate those around her, whether in her job, at school, or while doing volunteer work.

“Anne-Marie is a woman of conviction,” wrote Charbonneau. “She has exceptional leadership qualities that allow her to be confident, both in professional and social settings.”

In addition to being president of the Montreal board of LARAQ,  she is also a member of the Coalition pour la promotion des carrières en assurance de dommages, the Institute d’assurance de dommages du Québec, and most recently, the Insurance Institute of Canada as an incoming member of the CIP Society National Council.
