The launch of a new online crisis management centre – coinciding with the start of hurricane season – will offer real-time news and risk communications and access to crisis preparation resources for brokers throughout North America.

“From concept to reality, it has been a year or so in the making,” Todd Macumber, president of Hub International Risk Services, told Insurance Business. “Implementing an effective plan before a catastrophic event occurs is the best approach to safeguarding a company’s future and keeping families safe. We are charged with helping businesses reduce total cost of risk.  Being prepared, especially for disasters like hurricanes, makes a tremendous impact in limiting business operation disruptions and profit losses, not to mention that it saves lives.”

According to industry data, the top 10 global disasters in 2013 cost a total of $192 billion in combined economic and insured losses, and thousands of lost lives. The Hub Crisis Management Centre was created to arm individuals and businesses with information, resources, and access to risk experts, says Macumber, empowering them to reduce the impact of these disasters.

And although North American in concept, there is definitely a strong component of Canadian content.

“We tried to make a lot of content ‘best practice driven,’ universal across all types of businesses. But we do have some content that is very much relevant to Canadian industries,” says Macumber. “In terms of the real-time RSS feeds, with up-to-the-minute information on disasters, we tried to pull in content that was cross-border, in addition to some global content as well. There is content that should speak to our Canadian clients.”

The online resource will deliver real-time news and up-to-the-minute risk communications, as well as access to proactive preparation resources for individuals and businesses.  The centre will focus on the entire spectrum of disasters including cyber, natural, civil unrest and pandemics.

Macumber says that Hub has been getting some very good reviews from clients to date on the centre so far, and that there will be further improvements coming.

“There are some enhancements we are planning in the next few weeks,” he says, “such as different ways to interact with clients, in real time… making the system more dynamic than it already is.”

Optimization for mobile devices is key for the broker network, says Macumber, which means Hub will continue to upgrade and improve on the online centre.

“We always want to make sure there is a new and better way to get the information out there.”
