BAE Systems, a global provider of intelligence solutions, has announced that it is offering cloud-based cyber security for Canadian insurance carriers and other commercial interests for the first time.

This product comes in response to growing concerns resulting from high-profile breaches, including the hacking of several health care organizations in the U.S.

“Cyber intelligence is arguably the best defense companies can employ against the current wave of attacks on their critical assets,” said Tim Harvey, president, commercial solutions, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence. “By introducing Canadian companies to military-grade, cloud-based protection in a way that is easy to buy, consume and manage, we aim to help protect those companies against today’s most sophisticated threats.”

The solution will provide such protections as:

  • Zero Day Prevention – since 70-90% of malware is organization-specific, many threats arise that companies have never before encountered and thus require an advanced shield.
  • Insider Threat Protection – mitigates the risk of employees inadvertently or intentionally leaking data.
  • Email Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
  • Email Encryption
  • Email Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam

“We start with email hosting. One of the key aspects of security is that a lot of malware starts with email,” said Jim Anderson, president of the Americas, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence. “So the first thing you do is separate your email from the rest of your network, and right there you get some protection.”

Since these services are all provided through the cloud, they can be scaled to fit organizational needs.

“We bring all those modules to customers through cloud-based services, which makes it easy,” Anderson said. “Time to deploy is reduced and they can scale up or down in their environment as they see fit moving forward.”

Finally, while BAE Systems boasts 5500 commercial clients that leverage these services globally, it hopes that its strong presence in Canada will allow this product to thrive in its markets. In addition to helping CANATICS combat auto insurance fraud, BAE Systems also works with four of the top six national Canadian banks.

“If you look at us, we focus on four areas – security software, financial crime solutions, managed security services and managed applications,” Anderson said. “We’re trying to leverage that portfolio and bring it to Canada in ways we never have from a scale perspective in order to address the needs of customers.”
