Slater and Gordon has swooped for insurance executive Angus Eaton (pictured), who will be taking on key roles including chief risk officer.

An Aviva stalwart, Eaton has held various executive and board roles at the top insurer for more than 13 years. Among these were group legal director, managing director of commercial lines, and chief risk officer of the UK insurance business. From 1997 to 2005, he was with Norwich Union Life & Pensions.

Making the switch to the law firm, he will also serve as managing director of Slater and Gordon’s consumer legal services. The unit consists of the employment, residential conveyancing, and family law departments.

“Angus brings a wealth of experience and invaluable insight and expertise to the team,” said Slater and Gordon chief executive David Whitmore. “We have ambitious plans to develop and expand our consumer legal services offering and have built a strong leadership team with the skills required to deliver on these ambitious objectives.”

Eaton, who will chair the company’s risk management committee as well, is replacing Ken Fowlie. The latter stepped down from executive responsibilities in December but remains on the UK board as a non-executive director.

Commenting on his appointment, Eaton said: “Slater and Gordon’s mission to improve access to legal services really excites me.” He believes the firm is well placed to reach those who currently cannot access the legal services they need.

“We are in a world where our customers continually face uncertainly and ambiguity – anything from buying a house, writing a will, or going through divorce can be bewildering life events without the right help,” added the seasoned executive.

In addition, the firm has also announced the arrival of Yvonne Ferguson as chief technology and transformation officer leading a team tasked with digitising and expanding legal services. Her experience includes senior management roles at the likes of the Ministry of Defence, Royal Mail and Transport for London.
