Alexandra Spence is the director of marketing at Berkley Canada, a niche specialty insurance carrier. Spence began her insurance career as an E&O underwriter at a large multi-national insurer. Since joining Berkley in 2011, she has continuously taken on more responsibilities ranging from broker contract management, events, online engagement, product development, and corporate strategy. In her role as marketing director, Spence oversees all marketing and communication across the country and is responsible for client relations and distribution management. She is part of the Berkley Canada management team and is actively involved in the development and execution of corporate strategy. Spence went to Dalhousie University and graduated with a BA in Economics. She has completed her Chartered Insurance Professional designation and has a certificate in project management from the University of Toronto. The mother of two, who went on maternity leave in the first half of 2019, believes that better communication could help women stay on the career ladder after motherhood without feeling like they are swimming upstream. “I found coming back to work after my first child to be challenging,” she said. “It almost felt like starting from scratch again. We need to have more conversations in advance. Women want to come back and continue to be an important member of the team.” Spence featured in the speaker line-up at Insurance Business Canada’s Women in Insurance Toronto event in 2019.
