Neil Galjaard was appointed as Markel UK’s divisional managing director by Markel International in September 2016. Galjaard has the overall responsibility for the development and growth of the business, which consists of Markel UK, the regional insurance operation which also includes legal expenses insurance; Markel Tax, the accountants fee protection insurer and tax consultancy; and Markel Law, the SRA-authorised and regulated legal business. Galjaard has held senior management positions in leading UK-based financial services companies. Before joining Markel, he led the acquisition and integration of a commercial insurance broker into a private equity-backed utility provider, extending their service offering to SME businesses. Prior to that, at Towergate, Galjaard held positions as executive director of Paymentshield Group, as group strategy and change director, and latterly as CEO of the small business market, a new business unit within the group. He has also held positions at Lloyd’s TSB Insurance, Virgin Money Group, and AMP. In 2019, he was featured in the Insurance Business Global 100 industry professionals. Galjaard earned his MBA from Loughborough University.
