Etiqa, the insurance arm of Malaysian banking group Maybank, has appointed Chris Eng Poh Yoon as chief strategy officer, effective immediately.

Eng will take charge of developing and executing strategic initiatives to boost the insurer’s long-term growth prospects. He will report to Kamaludin Ahmad, the chief executive officer of Maybank Ageas Holding Bhd.

“To grow our leadership position, we are dedicating significant resources and forming a core group of highly experienced individuals to explore new areas of opportunity,” Kamaludin said of the appointment.

“Chris’s extensive experience in managing and monitoring all research activities within Etiqa and [his] knowledge of our industry makes him the right person to head up this team, which will be focused on exploring new avenues for innovation and differentiation.”

Previously, Eng headed the research, products and alternative investments portfolio in Etiqa, as well as the equities and fixed income research team. He has over 20 years’ experience in the financial services and consulting sector.

Eng joined Etiqa from OSK Investment Bank, where he was a senior analyst. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electronic and electrical engineering from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, has a master of philosophy in engineering from the University of Cambridge, and is a Chevening Scholar with several awards for equity research.
