London-based Peter Smith (pictured) has assumed the newly created role of executive vice president and managing director at Liberty Mutual Re (LM Re).

The 25-year (re)insurance market veteran came onboard Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM) in 2012 and most recently served as executive underwriting officer for LSM. Smith’s credentials include his stint as deputy active underwriter of Sagicor Syndicate at Lloyd’s.

“I am delighted that Peter will be focussing more of his time on the LM Re portfolio and performance,” commented LM Re president Dieter Winkel. “We have a proven track record as a resilient business capable of profitable growth even in challenging circumstances.

“Peter’s ongoing leadership and support for our business will be exactly what we need to take us even further on our high-performance journey.”

Meanwhile, in addition to Smith’s new remit, the EVP and MD will retain his regional LM Re responsibilities. The treaty reinsurance business employs approximately 200 people in 15 offices globally.
