Starr Insurance Companies has appointed Haoming Zhou as general manager and president of Starr China Property and Casualty Insurance Ltd., effective September 02.

The appointment will be subject to approval by the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, and he will be based in Shanghai, a statement from the company said.

Zhou has more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. Prior to joining Starr, he held a variety of senior management positions, based in various cities around Asia-Pacific, including Singapore, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. Zhou holds a PhD in civil engineering and began his professional career as an engineer in China.

“China is one of the world’s most dynamic economies,” said Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Starr Insurance Companies. “Our company was founded there 100 years ago. Today, China is one of our most important markets. With all of his experience and expertise in the region, Haoming adds greatly to our ability to serve that market.”

Starr Insurance Companies traces its roots to Shanghai, where Cornelius Vander Starr founded American Asiatic Underwriters in 1919. The histories of insurance giants AIG, AIA, and Starr all share this common starting point.
