Conduit Re has appointed Anthony Mongiello as chief operating officer, a role that gives him oversight of operations, information technology, underwriting operations and claims, and a seat on the executive committee.
Mongiello joins from Aspen Insurance Holdings, where he served as COO for its reinsurance and capital markets businesses. Before Aspen he spent more than 15 years at AXA XL, including as global head of operations for its reinsurance division - a tenure that spans the company through its XL Catlin and post-AXA acquisition phases, giving him direct experience of large-scale operational integration at a global reinsurer.
Neil Eckert, Conduit Re's chief executive, said Mongiello's depth of reinsurance operations experience would support the company's growth and long-term strategy. Mongiello said he was delighted to join and described Conduit Re as an exciting opportunity to build on the company's momentum.
Conduit Re launched in December 2020 via a $1.1 billion IPO on the London Stock Exchange - one of the largest new reinsurance formations of the class of 2020, and unusual in being a publicly listed pure-play reinsurer from inception rather than a private equity-backed vehicle. It has operated without a permanent named COO since launch.
The past 18 months have required significant leadership reconstruction. Founding CEO Trevor Carvey retired in March 2025. Chief underwriting officer Gregory Roberts departed in May 2025 following $100 million to $140 million in California wildfire losses. Nick Pritchard served as interim CUO before Stephen Postlewhite was appointed to the role permanently in January 2026. Eckert, who co-founded Conduit Re as executive chairman, assumed the CEO role on a permanent basis in May 2025 after leading the company through its transition period.
Mongiello's appointment as COO is the final executive committee appointment in that rebuilding cycle. He arrives as Conduit Re returns to growth - the company reported gross premiums written of $430.3 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 4.9 per cent year on year, with casualty growing more than 23 per cent as the company expands its share with existing clients and develops new cedant relationships.
For reinsurance brokers and cedants placing property, casualty and specialty treaty business with Conduit Re, the COO appointment has a practical dimension beyond the leadership narrative.
Operational infrastructure - claims handling speed and consistency, underwriting operations workflow, data and reporting quality - is where cedants most frequently experience the difference between a reinsurer that performs to its stated appetite and one that creates friction at the point of recovery or renewal. A reinsurer that has been through the leadership disruption Conduit Re experienced in 2025 will typically have seen some operational strain during that period, regardless of how well the underwriting portfolio held together.
Mongiello's specific background is relevant here. Running operations at AXA XL's reinsurance division at scale, then at Aspen's reinsurance and capital markets businesses, puts him in a strong position to assess and where necessary rebuild operational capability at a company whose premium volume - approaching $1.7 billion in annualised gross written premium based on Q1 2026 run-rate - has grown significantly faster than its headcount and infrastructure since inception. For cedants whose programmes renew at January 1, this appointment is a positive signal about Conduit Re's operational direction heading into the main renewal season.
