AXA

AXA XL Reinsurance, part of the AXA Group, is a global provider of property and casualty reinsurance solutions. It has in-house climate scientists, proprietary pricing tools, and a presence in all key global markets.

History of AXA XL Reinsurance

AXA XL Re started as XL in 1986. Its roots trace back to the Cayman Islands, and the company later moved to Bermuda.

In 2018, AXA acquired XL Group, creating today’s AXA XL Reinsurance division. Here are more milestones that helped its journey:

  • 1985: creation of the AXA brand as part of AXA’s global identity
  • 1991: XL listed on the New York Stock Exchange through an IPO
  • 1996: AXA merged with UAP as part of its expansion strategy
  • 1999: XL renamed itself XL Capital Ltd. after acquiring Mid Ocean
  • 2003: XL purchased French reinsurer Le Mans Re to grow in Europe
  • 2015: XL finalized its $4.1 billion deal to acquire Catlin Group
  • 2024: Greg Schiffer named CEO of North America Reinsurance at AXA XL Reinsurance

AXA XL Re’s most recent transformation followed AXA’s full integration of XL. The combined brand now leads in global P&C reinsurance with climate science at its core.

The future at AXA XL Reinsurance

AXA XL Re linked with McGill and Partners to simplify digital risk placement. It uses a custom dashboard to streamline quoting and improve exposure insight. With this strategy, the firm strengthens its lead in a more connected and efficient future.

AXA XL Reinsurance grew gross premiums by 12 percent in early 2025, led by ILS cessions. Most of that growth was ceded to AXA’s own ILS Capital Management platform. This strategy lets the company serve clients, reduce risk, and earn fees without expanding its own book.
