Global energy investment is on track to reach US$3.4 trillion in 2026, according to the International Energy Agency, split across renewables, power infrastructure, oil and gas, and mining. Much of that capital is going into new projects. MS Amlin has positioned itself to write the insurance that covers them during construction.

Three new hires into its natural resources team give it the underwriting capability to cover power, mining, and oil and gas projects from the build phase for the first time.

Adam Casselman joins as lead underwriter, onshore construction, with 19 years of experience in the insurance market. He joins from Aspen, where he was most recently head of international construction, and held earlier positions at Allianz, Canopius and Sompo. His specialism suits the new line: construction all-risk for the build phase of major energy assets is technically distinct from the operational cover MS Amlin has written to date.

Robin Waller joins as head of natural resources and lead underwriter, upstream. He brings 31 years of industry experience and was previously head of energy and construction at Aspen, where he built long-standing relationships with Lloyd's brokers across upstream energy business globally. His arrival provides the leadership structure for a broader proposition.

The third appointment, Krishna Mistry as assistant underwriter, power and renewables, adds capability in a sub-class growing in both volume and complexity. Mistry began her career as a graduate trainee in Aon's natural resources team before moving to QBE as an assistant underwriter.

From operational to construction risk

Covering a power station or mining facility during construction is a different proposition from insuring it once it is operational. Construction all-risk policies must account for project delays, defective workmanship, equipment damage during installation and third-party liabilities on active build sites. The claims drivers, attachment structures and accumulation risks are distinct from the operational book.

Bringing in Casselman specifically to lead that line signals that MS Amlin understands the difference rather than asking existing underwriters to stretch. The move also extends the range of business brokers can place with the syndicate. A client developing a new power facility previously had to source construction cover elsewhere and return to MS Amlin once the asset became operational. That gap now closes.

The three hires follow Nicola Harris's arrival as marine and natural resources director in August 2025. Harris joined from AXA XL to lead the team. She took charge of a portfolio spanning upstream, midstream, downstream and renewables, and the appointments under her leadership represent the execution phase of a build that began with her hire.

Harris said MS Amlin's expansion into onshore construction creates "a new avenue for disciplined growth" and allows the firm to support clients from project development through to ongoing operations. "Together, these appointments reflect our ambition to build a leadership position in natural resources and remain a long-term partner to brokers and clients," she said.
