Manulife announced on Tuesday the commencement of its global partnership with the World Heart Federation (WHF) to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to strengthen CVD prevention efforts.

According to the WHF, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, with 17.5 million people worldwide dying from disorders such as heart attacks or strokes in 2015. Many deaths caused by CVD are preventable through lifestyle changes such as proper diet, exercise, and not smoking. The partnership between the organizations seeks to raise awareness of these methods leading to improved heart health.

“Manulife sets out to help people achieve their dreams and aspirations,” said Roy Gori, president and CEO of Manulife Asia. “A healthy life is crucial in being able to reach those goals – which is why we believe Manulife has a substantial part to play in promoting good health and active living around the world.”

He added that WHF and Manulife will work together to make a meaningful impact on the health of Manulife’s customers as well as the communities they live in.

Gori added that this is especially true in Asia, where over three-fourths of deaths due to CVD occur in low- or middle-income countries.

“Like the WHF, Manulife has a vast and vibrant footprint in the region, and we believe we can leverage the good work of the WHF to drive up healthy heart awareness,” he said.

Manulife will launch several activities throughout 2017 as part of its thrust to promote a heart-healthy lifestyle throughout its markets, aiming to produce a tangible improvement in the health of its customers, employees, and communities.
