Markel International has appointed Gordon Lam (pictured) as senior professional and financial risks underwriter, beginning early 2019.

Lam will be initially based in Singapore, before relocating to Hong Kong in due course. He will work closely with Simon Moi, head of professional and financial risks (PFR), to manage and underwrite financial lines and casualty business in the Asian region.

With over 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry, Lam joins Markel from Beazley, where he was underwriting manager. Prior to that, he was a senior development and special projects manager with Citystate Asia Pacific Insurance.

“Gordon’s appointment is significant for our PFR team as we grow our underwriting capabilities in Asia,” said Matt Cannock, Markel’s managing director for Asia. “He will be a great asset to our team, and I have no doubt our clients will stand to gain the most from this move. His appointment underlines our commitment to the region here and will play a big role in expanding our business footprint across Asia.”

Moi added: “Gordon’s prior experience in managing a broad range of product lines including management liability and professional indemnity will benefit Markel significantly and he brings with him well-established contacts – valuable as we develop our book of business across the region.”
