MSIG Asia has announced that CEO Alan J Wilson (pictured above) will retire on April 1, with COO Clemens Philippi stepping in as Wilson’s successor.

Wilson will support the transition process as senior advisor until early July and will remain a director of MSIG Asia and an executive officer of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (Japan) and deputy head of the international business department. He will continue to sit on seven other boards and will continue to be based in Singapore, the insurer said.

Wilson joined MSIG Asia in 2008 and has served as CEO for 14 years. According to the insurer, Wilson led the company in delivering consistent top- and bottom-line growth in Asia and expanding its network in the region to 14 markets. In April 2015, Wilson was appointed as the first foreign executive officer in Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (Japan). He has also held chairmanships and directorships on the boards of 20 MSIG-related entities around the region. He is an industry veteran with 43 years of experience, 40 of which have been spent in Asia.

“Wilson’s consistent performance and drive, combined with his commitment to serving the best long-term interests of the company, have materially strengthened the company’s business in the region,” MSIG Asia said. “He leaves a more agile and resilient company, well placed to win in this fast-changing, dynamic industry.”

Philippi (pictured directly above) joined MSIG Asia in April 2021 and was appointed director soon after. He will sit on several of the boards as a non-executive director in MSIG entities across Asia.

He has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry in the risk consultancy, broking and carrier fields. Prior to relocating in Singapore in 2015, Philippi has worked in Luxembourg, London and Tokyo. In 2015, he led regional business development for Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty and in 2017, became CEO for ASEAN of Euler Hermes. For the past 11 months, Philippi, as chief operating officer, has been leading the business development and digitalisation, technology solutions, risk management and actuarial services, and technical services departments.

“Clemens has a deep understanding and experience of our business, the industry, and the markets in which we operate,” Wilson said. “He is a strong, dynamic and values-driven leader with an impressive track record of delivering consistent high-quality performance. On behalf of the company, and the group, I warmly welcome Clemens to the role and wish him every success.”
