Sompo Canopius AG, a specialty insurer owned by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance, has appointed Karen Vizard as international medical expenses underwriter. Joining from Arch Insurance, she will report to Bernie de Haldevang, global head of specialty.

Working closely with Sompo Canopius’ accident and health insurance team, Vizard will create products tailored to clients’ various needs. The appointment is timely, with the rising demand for quality international healthcare coverage for expatriates and key local staff globally.

Vizard has been working in the Lloyd’s market since 1989, and the international healthcare industry since 1992. She assumed responsibility for the international medical account at Cassidy Davis Syndicate in 1999 before joining Brit Insurance in 2005 where she brought a distressed book of US healthcare business back to profitability. In 2008, she joined Presidio as deputy to the managing director and part of the executive committee, before moving to Arch Europe in 2012.

De Haldevang commented: “Karen brings an extra dimension to our A&H team, enabling us to focus on some niche areas that we haven’t covered in the past. Her expertise, combined with our relationships and profile in the market, will enable us to grow this business with a focus on profitability, rather than volume, over the long term.”
