Following Howard Hughes Holdings’ US$2.1 billion acquisition of Vantage Group Holdings, the Bermuda-based reinsurer is launching a dedicated facultative business for the first time.
Vantage announced the launch of a dedicated facultative business, led by Lisa Pickard, who joins as president of facultative reinsurance reporting to chief executive Greg Hendrick. Pickard joined Arch Capital in 2007 as a property facultative underwriter in Boston and rose through underwriting and leadership roles at Arch Re Facultative over 15 years. She was named Arch Re Fac’s first chief strategy officer in January 2022 before leaving in May of that year to found Atlas Gray, an advisory firm focused on underwriting strategy and portfolio construction.
Grandisson, Vantage’s executive chairman, built his career at Arch Capital and served as its CEO. Gansberg, CEO-designate, was president of Arch Capital Group before being tapped to lead Vantage by June 2027. Pickard spent 15 years at the same firm. The Arch alumni network is now running Vantage.
Facultative reinsurance places risk on individual assets or policies rather than whole portfolios, giving cedants a way to manage peak exposures that treaty programs cannot absorb efficiently. It is also where carriers and brokers form some of their more durable relationships, because successful fac placements require underwriters who understand individual risk deeply rather than relying on portfolio pricing models.
Vantage launched in 2020 as a treaty reinsurer and has since expanded into insurance and insurance-linked securities. Its gross written premium reached US$473 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 29% year-on-year, with the reinsurance segment contributing US$129 million of that total. The growth came alongside a combined ratio of 101.6% in Q2, as losses from the Middle East conflict and adverse reserve development weighed on underwriting results. Adding facultative extends the platform into a line the company has not previously accessed and gives Hendrick’s team a way to follow cedants into their most complex individual placements.
The timing places Vantage in a fac market that is already in motion. Gallagher Re named Casandra Ceballos to lead its global fac facilities and portfolio solutions proposition on November 2, the day before Vantage’s announcement. Willis Re closed its acquisition of BMS Re US on November 1, adding a US treaty platform and an ILS structuring capability the broker had not held since 2021.
The simultaneous arrival of multiple well-resourced players in a line that brokers have flagged as tightening on complex risks gives cedants more options going into January 2027 renewals, but also signals that competition for the more sophisticated placements will intensify.
Grandisson said Pickard’s track record of building high-caliber teams and scaling disciplined portfolios made her the right choice to establish the facultative line. Pickard said she looks forward to assembling a team and developing broker and client relationships for the new business.
