Former Florida insurance commissioner Bill Gunter (pictured) has passed away at age 89.

Gunter, who was named “Most Effective Insurance Commissioner in the United States” by the National Insurance Consumers Organization in 1988, died on Monday in his Tallahassee home.

Citing confirmation from funeral director Rocky Bevis, a Tallahassee Democrat report said Gunter passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family. According to the publication, the ex-congressman had been in home hospice care.

Gunter’s previous roles included president of both the National Association of State Treasurers and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. His insurance career began at State Farm in 1959 before he entered politics in 1966.

In recognition of his lifelong record of public service, Gunter was designated as “A Great Floridian” in 2013 by then Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet.

“Throughout his decades of leadership on both the state and federal level, Bill always worked in a bipartisan way, maintaining a high level of integrity, and has stayed true to his rural Florida values and the values of Floridians,” Tallahassee Democrat quoted Economic Club of Florida’s Bill Moor as saying about Gunter in 2021 when the latter was awarded the Stan Tait Memorial Award.
