Starr International Insurance Philippines, a branch of the Hong Kong-based general insurer, has appointed Jose Cuisia, Jr. as its chairman.

As chairman, Cuisia will work with local management for the strategic development and growth of the branch and other Starr entities in the region.

Cuisia was the Philippine ambassador to the US from 2011 to 2016. Prior to that, he was president and CEO of Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company (Philam) for 16 years, until his retirement in 2009. He also served as governor of the Philippine’s central bank and chairman of its monetary board from 1990 to 1993.

“Joey has had a long and distinguished career in both business and public service, including building Philam Life into the largest and most successful life insurer in the Philippines and serving as Ambassador to the country. We have been great friends and colleagues for a very long time and it is wonderful to work with him again at Starr,” commented Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman of Starr Companies.

Cuisia, 72, earned his bachelor’s degree from De La Salle University and his MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
