Africa Specialty Risks debuts portal for automated policy management

Reinsurance News

Africa Specialty Risks (ASR) has launched ASR 24-7, an automated underwriting portal aimed at streamlining policy management for authorized brokers.

The portal enables brokers to obtain instant policy quotes, bind coverage, and manage policies. It also integrates directly with ASR’s underwriting function. Brokers will have access to automated pricing and quoting services for both insurance and reinsurance products.

At present, ASR 24-7 supports renewable energy and directors and officers liability risks. ASR said that it plans to add property, political violence, terrorism, and additional energy lines to the portal over the coming months.

Mikir Shah (pictured), chief executive officer of ASR, said the platform offers brokers an immediate and responsive service while opening a new channel for accessing ASR’s specialty underwriting.

“The portal also helps strengthen our distribution network across Africa, allowing us to broaden our partnerships as we look to increase economic development by fulfilling unmet insurance needs. We look forward to expanding the platform’s capabilities and product offerings to further support our brokers, partners, and clients,” Shah said.

ASR noted that expansion of the platform’s capabilities and product offerings is planned to further support brokers, partners, and clients.

ASR’s expansion

In a move to expand underwriting capacity, ASR recently entered into binding authority agreements with Sava Re, a Slovenia-based reinsurance company. These agreements, which became effective in March, allow Sava Re to provide up to US$10 million in line size across ASR’s core insurance and reinsurance lines.

ASR Ltd, the UK entity of Africa Specialty Risks, began operating as a Lloyd’s service company in October. Through this development, ASR Ltd can now underwrite business on behalf of ASR Syndicate 2454 at Lloyd’s.

Further enhancing its operational footprint, ASR’s Mauritius-based business also transitioned into a Lloyd’s service company as of January 2025. This move positions ASR to underwrite business locally on behalf of Syndicate 2454, supporting Mauritius’s emergence as a reinsurance hub for Africa.

In January, ASR introduced the Baobab Consortium, the first Africa-focused Lloyd’s consortium. The Baobab Consortium offers up to US$21 million in underwriting capacity across a range of insurance sectors.

ASR has also strengthened its underwriting leadership with key appointments. Genevieve Ahinful and Suzan Pardesi were named deputy active underwriters for Syndicate 2454 in early 2025.
