Insurance giant Allianz has added a top London-based executive to the management board of its corporate insurer arm.

The insurer has announced that Paul O’Neill will become the chief underwriting officer specialty of Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty (AGCS) on October 1.

In his new role and as a member of the AGCS Board of Management, O’Neill will oversee the corporate insurer’s energy, marine, aviation and entertainment lines of business.

O’Neill, the current global head of marine and energy, will succeed Bill Scaldaferri, who will take over the AGCS Board responsibility for North America on July 1.

“Paul will be an excellent addition to the AGCS Board of Management, with his strong technical underwriting expertise and deep knowledge of global insurance markets,” said AGCS CEO Chris Fischer Hirs.

O’Neill joined Allianz in 2003 as regional manager for energy in Singapore. He has been the global head of marine and energy since 2014 and global head of energy since 2005.

O’Neill has performed risk engineering reviews for the London insurance market. He also worked at Lloyd’s, where he transitioned into underwriting.

He will hand over his current post to Simon Buxton, the London-based global head of reinsurance at AGCS.

“With his strong understanding of both traditional and alternative insurance solutions, Simon is well positioned to lead our global Marine and Energy underwriting teams,” Hirs said of Buxton.
