Swiss Re senior executive Russell Higginbotham has been appointed as the new president of the Insurance Institute of London (IIL), the organisation recently announced.

Higginbotham succeeds Dominic Christian, chief executive at Aon UK. He will be joined by new IIL deputy president Roger Sander of Lighthouse Group.

Higginbotham, who currently serves as the global head of life and health products at Swiss Re, said he is privileged to lead the IIL “at this exciting time.”

“Over the last seven years, membership of the Institute has grown by over 52% to well over 23,500 – that’s about half of all the people who work in insurance in London. This means the IIL is one of the largest professional bodies in the country,” Higginbotham said.

The new IIL president said he wants to maintain IIL’s global reputation as a “centre of excellence by supporting the next generation as they study to gain their professional qualifications.”

Higginbotham added that the theme of his IIL presidency will be focused on technology.

“With London being a world leader in the financial technology revolution we have a great opportunity over the next 12 months to bring high quality content and dialogue about the impact of technology to our membership,” he said.
