Global broker Marsh has announced the appointment of Koen van Leuven as marine broking director for Marsh Netherlands, effective summer 2024.

In the role, van Leuven will be tasked with steering Marsh Netherlands’ marine division, a practice which offers hull and cargo insurance broking services alongside risk advisory support to the nation’s maritime industry.

Prior to his position at Marsh, van Leuven was employed at AIG, where he served as head of marine for Talbot Underwriting Services and AIG UK since 2022. His career at AIG, starting in 2008, has also seen him occupy key marine underwriting positions in both London and Rotterdam.

Set to take his post in Rotterdam, van Leuven will directly report to Ivo Wansink, specialty and placement leader at Marsh Netherlands, and Kristof De Bremme, head of marine, cargo, and logistics for Europe within Marsh Specialty.

Wansink commented on the appointment, emphasising how the Dutch shipping industry plays a vital role in the global maritime ecosystem.

“Marsh is committed to attracting top talent and investing in its leadership team to better serve its clients as they navigate the challenges and opportunities in this dynamic sector,” Wansink said. “Koen is widely respected among his peers and, with his in-depth knowledge of the global marine industry, will be a very welcome addition to the team.”

De Bremm, meanwhile, described the move as an important first step as Marsh aims to capitalise on the logistics segment in Europe reaching more than a trillion euros in the next five years.

“Koen’s appointment forms part of Marsh Specialty’s strategy to provide market-leading marine, cargo, and logistics solutions to support our European clients as they take on new challenges,” De Bremme said.

Elsewhere for the global company, Marsh parent Marsh McLennan has expanded its Lloyd’s insurance facility for Ukraine’s export trade amid the ongoing conflict.
