Indonesia’s insurance market is growing by volume while remaining structurally underserved by penetration - a combination that makes the country one of the most closely watched distribution opportunities in Asia-Pacific, and one that Hanwha Life is now moving to address through a sustained financial education program.

The South Korean life insurer has partnered with Save the Children to develop a peer-led financial education network in Bandung, West Java, targeting high school students through a model that trains university mentors from Institut Teknologi Bandung and teachers capable of delivering lessons independently once the initial initiative ends. Approximately 700 participants have been involved so far, including 600 young people. Ten students per school have been designated as financial education leaders. In November, Hanwha Life plans to extend the reach of the program through a financial literacy module at BFN Fest, Indonesia’s national fintech festival. Twenty university participants are expected to visit South Korea in January 2027 for further training.

The numbers behind the initiative

The scale of the opportunity the program is addressing is visible in the data. Indonesia’s 2026 national financial literacy survey, conducted by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), found financial inclusion had reached 93.61% - meaning the vast majority of Indonesians now have access to at least one formal financial product. Financial literacy, however, stood at just 69.57%. For insurance specifically, the gap is sharper: the insurance literacy index was 45.45% in 2025, while insurance inclusion reached only 28.50%.

That gap between access and understanding is the market condition that shapes distribution in Indonesia. Life insurance premiums reached IDR125.75 trillion in the first eight months of 2026, up 7.01% year on year according to OJK’s industry figures - growth driven by rising incomes and expanding bancassurance channels rather than by broad consumer understanding of what policies cover or why they matter. OJK insurance supervisory chief Ogi Prastomiyono called in February for stronger insurance education to help younger consumers understand risk protection and make informed financial decisions.

What this means for brokers and distribution partners

For life brokers and bancassurance distributors operating in Indonesia, the literacy gap has a direct commercial dimension. Clients who do not understand what they are buying are harder to retain, more likely to lapse, and less likely to respond to cross-sell conversations at renewal. Improving baseline financial literacy is not purely philanthropic activity - it reduces the friction cost of every sale and expands the pool of clients who can be converted from access to genuine coverage.

Hanwha Life’s position in the market is also widening beyond the program itself. The broader Hanwha group has been building its Indonesian insurance footprint through Hanwha General Insurance’s acquisition of a controlling stake in Lippo General Insurance, adding general insurance capacity to the life operation. That combination - a growing life and general insurance platform, backed by a financial education investment that is building brand recognition among the next generation of Indonesian consumers - signals a long-term market commitment rather than a single product push.

For brokers tracking which international carriers are building durable positions in Indonesia rather than simply writing premium at current rates, Hanwha’s approach is worth noting.
