AXA China Region Insurance Company (Bermuda) Limited and AXA International Reinsurance (Shanghai) Company Limited have formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Biotech Services Holdings Limited.

The agreement is intended to facilitate joint efforts in the research and development of advanced cancer therapies, with a particular focus on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) and associated services.

This collaboration is positioned to expand the spectrum of cancer treatment alternatives available to policyholders in Asia.

BNCT’s role in targeted cancer therapy

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy is a specialised radiotherapy technique that involves the delivery of a boron-based compound to cancerous tissue.

Following absorption by the tumour, the area is exposed to a neutron beam, resulting in a nuclear reaction that targets and destroys malignant cells while minimising impact on healthy tissue.

BNCT is being considered for use in cases where conventional radiotherapy is less effective, such as with certain brain tumours and recurrent cancers of the head and neck.

Additional studies are underway to assess its potential for other cancer types, including melanoma, liver cancer, and malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Japan has incorporated BNCT into its national health insurance system since 2020, making it accessible as a clinical treatment. Ongoing clinical trials in Japan are evaluating the therapy’s effectiveness for newly diagnosed glioblastoma and exploring its application to a wider range of cancer diagnoses.

Regional cancer trends and insurance implications

Recent statistics from the Hong Kong Cancer Registry showed a steady increase in head and neck cancer cases over the past 10 years.

In 2022, 1,464 new cases were reported involving the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, and nasopharynx.

Males accounted for roughly two-thirds of these cases, with the highest incidence among those aged 45 to 65.

These trends highlight the ongoing need for diverse and effective cancer treatment options in the region.

AXA’s strategy for medical innovation

Janet Lee, chief life and health insurance officer at AXA Hong Kong and Macau, said the insurer is committed to adapting its products to reflect current medical advancements.

“We continuously track healthcare trends and integrate cutting-edge medical solutions into our insurance plans to ensure our services remain relevant and impactful. We are delighted to collaborate with China Biotech Services to jointly explore innovative medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, further enhancing our insurance offerings and deliver exceptional health protection and a wide range of care options to customers in need,” she said.

Service enhancements in the Greater Bay Area

This agreement follows AXA Hong Kong and Macau’s recent expansion of healthcare services in the Greater Bay Area.

The insurer has updated its Cancer Medical Concierge network and introduced an Endoscopy Medical Concierge service – both designed for customers with selected medical insurance and employee benefits plans

These enhancements are aimed at improving access to cross-border medical services between Hong Kong and Mainland China.

The expanded network now covers more cancer types and offers additional benefits, such as premium waivers and recovery subsidies for eligible policyholders.
