Ariel Re has tapped Richard Sammons (pictured above) as active underwriter of Syndicate 2006, handing him the reins of the newly stood-up Lloyd's vehicle as the global reinsurance business pushes deeper into specialty lines from its Bermuda, London and Hong Kong hubs.

The appointment, cleared by Lloyd's, slots Sammons into one of the more closely watched seats in the market following Ariel Re's decision to split its Lloyd's footprint into two syndicates from 2026.

Sammons brings close to 30 years across the Lloyd's and global reinsurance markets, with a track record in specialty underwriting, portfolio management and senior leadership.

He joins from Gallagher Re, where he ran the UK aerospace business. Before that, he spent a decade at Hamilton Re in Bermuda, where he rose to head of specialty and helped build out a diversified specialty book.

A platform built around diversification

Sammons inherits the post after Lloyd's cleared Syndicate 2006 in November 2025 to write its 2026 reinsurance book. The platform has been put together to fuse specialty classes with property catastrophe and risk business, and is targeting £150 million in premium across key international lines in its opening year.

That green light followed an approval in principle from Lloyd's for Ariel Re to carve its market presence into two distinct syndicates from 2026.

Under the split, Syndicate 1910 will focus solely on property catastrophe reinsurance, while Syndicate 2006 picks up a diversified portfolio spanning marine, specialty, cyber and clean energy under the Ariel Green brand.

Managing director Darren Lednor, who has previously flagged that the company expects Syndicate 2006 "to be accretive to Ariel Re in 2026," pointed to Sammons' market standing in announcing the hire.

"Richard is a highly-respected market leader with deep technical expertise and a proven track record in specialty reinsurance. His disciplined underwriting approach, leadership experience and strong market relationships make him an excellent addition to Ariel Re," Lednor said.

Lednor added that the appointment reflects continued investment in Syndicate 2006 as the company looks to build a diversified underwriting platform geared toward sustainable returns over the cycle.

Sammons, for his part, framed the move as a fit with the syndicate's stage of development, describing the vehicle as a compelling proposition within the Lloyd's market.

"I am delighted to be joining Ariel Re at such an exciting stage in its development. Syndicate 2006 represents a compelling platform within Lloyd's, and I look forward to working with the team to further develop its portfolio and contribute to Ariel Re's long-term success," Sammons said.
