Africa Specialty Risks (ASR) has launched Syndicate 2454 in South Africa, establishing a local underwriting presence in Sandton.

The syndicate will underwrite insurance and reinsurance risks in South Africa and neighboring countries, providing AA-rated capacity across specialty lines.

ASR said the South Africa platform strengthens its ability to support developing markets and to work directly with intermediaries in the region. The company has expanded its underwriting resources locally and plans further hires through 2026 as the syndicate grows.

Commenting on the launch, ASR CEO Mikir Shah said the company will be able to “write risks directly in the market,” adding that staying close to customers allows ASR to offer global capacity more effectively.

The expansion comes as the Lloyd’s market continues to emphasize disciplined growth and selective underwriting. A 2025 market review by Howden Re found that syndicates have maintained stable performance even as some specialty and property classes show signs of softening rates.

The report noted that sustained profitability is tied to maintaining focus on portfolio quality, which has encouraged syndicates to deepen their presence in markets where they can engage closely with clients. ASR’s decision to underwrite locally through Syndicate 2454 reflects this push for proximity and more direct market participation.

ASR has added several experienced professionals as part of its South Africa build-out. Xolisa Bangeni has joined as captives manager and will oversee the development and structuring of captive programs for large corporates. Bangeni previously held roles in risk finance consulting at Marsh and in portfolio and investment oversight at Hollard.

Xolile Kahla has also joined ASR as a construction underwriter. Kahla brings engineering and construction market experience across Southern Africa, including roles with Munich Re and Zurich. They join Corinne Beadsmoore, ASR’s head of business development for Southern Africa, in working with brokers, Lloyd’s intermediaries and local carriers.

The South Africa launch follows a series of earlier moves to strengthen Syndicate 2454’s leadership. Earlier this year, ASR appointed additional underwriting leaders, including new deputy active underwriters, to help manage the syndicate as it takes on more regional and specialty business.
