Howden Re has announced the launch of a Hong Kong-focused reinsurance broking platform and the appointment of Roy Wong (pictured above) as managing director, reinsurance, Hong Kong, effective July 21.
Wong will lead the development of Howden Re’s treaty reinsurance business for clients based in Hong Kong. His role includes delivering solutions across core business lines aligned with the specific requirements of the local market.
Wong brings 25 years of industry experience to the role. He most recently served as head of Hong Kong reinsurance at Aon Re. He will report to Andy Souter, head of Asia Pacific, Howden Re International, and collaborate with the regional team, including Emily Lo, head of analytics, Asia.
“Roy’s appointment reflects our continued investment in the Asia Pacific region and our commitment to building long-term, sustainable reinsurance capabilities. His technical expertise, deep market knowledge, and trusted client relationships will enhance our ability to deliver specialist solutions that are grounded in local insight and backed by global resources,” Souter said.
The launch of the Hong Kong platform is part of a broader regional expansion strategy. Earlier this year, Howden Re established a new office in Taiwan, led by Jimmy Tsai, who joined the firm in June.
Additional hires are also planned for the Hong Kong office. Brian Chan and Karen Liu will join as senior brokers, bringing further regional experience. Chan spent the last six years with Guy Carpenter in Hong Kong.
His prior roles included director at JLT Re and actuarial analyst and catastrophe modeler at Willis Re. Liu also joins from Guy Carpenter, having previously served as director at JLT Re. She began her career at Prudential Assurance.
In tandem with these regional appointments, Howden Re promoted Cynthia Cui to head of Asia-Pacific facultative reinsurance. Cui has been with the firm since 2012 and most recently led business development in North Asia.
The leadership changes also align with a broader organizational transition within the Howden Group. Previously, the company announced that Rohan Bhappu would take on the role of deputy CEO for Howden Asia. Bhappu is set to succeed Goh Chye Huat as CEO of Howden Asia on October 1.
