The Hong Kong Insurance Authority (IA) has alerted the public to a website impersonating two registered insurers in the city.

In an announcement by the regulator, the website with the domain name “http://1214hgjyfw.pc1.1118111.net/” is pretending to be the official website of Prudential Hong Kong Limited and Prudential General Insurance Hong Kong Limited. Both companies have said that that they have no connection with the possibly fraudulent website.

According to the IA, the case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police for further investigation. It advised anyone who has transacted with or supplied personal details to the website to contact Prudential, as well as report it to the police.

The IA regularly comes out with warnings against fraudulent websites, which are likely part of phishing scams. In these scams, cybercriminals use a website that appears like the legitimate website of a financial institution such as their insurer or bank. Victims are misled into supplying their online financial login credentials, allowing cybercriminals to gain access and steal money or personal information.
