Specialist transport insurer NTI will serve as event partner for the Queensland Trucking Association's (QTA) 2026 Road Freight Industry Awards, extending a sponsorship relationship between the two organisations that stretches back years.

The awards night, set for September 19 at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane's Bowen Hills, is expected to draw more than 450 guests from across the state's freight sector, including fleet owners, transport operators, suppliers and government representatives.

NTI describes itself as Australia's leading specialist insurer for the transport and logistics sector, with close to five decades in the industry. Its involvement with Queensland operators extends beyond underwriting into sponsorship of road safety initiatives, industry research and transport association events.

Sponsorship follows a broader pattern

NTI's backing of the QTA awards sits within a wider pattern of insurer involvement in Australian trucking recognition programs this year. At the Australian Trucking Association's 2026 National Trucking Industry Awards in June, NTI sponsored the Outstanding Contribution category, won by its own Michael Edmonds, while the separate TruckSafe John Kelly Memorial Award at the same event was backed by AEI Insurance Broking Group. NTI also sponsors the Greenstart Award for workplace sustainability at the Victorian Transport Association's Australian Freight Industry Awards, marking their 36th year in 2026, and has sponsored the National Road Transport Association's 2026 industry awards.

Taken together, the pattern suggests insurers with transport-sector books, both underwriters like NTI and brokers like AEI, increasingly use award sponsorship as a visible way to signal specialist expertise and sector commitment, alongside product and claims service.

The sponsorship lands against a backdrop of mounting strain on Queensland's road freight operators. Australia's transport sector is currently running roughly 28,000 drivers short, according to Insurance Business, even as road freight continues to move 75% of the country's goods. Insolvencies across transport, postal and warehousing businesses climbed from 196 in the year to June 2022 to 734 in the year to June 2025, with the current financial year tracking toward a further increase.

For a specialist insurer like NTI, that backdrop gives sponsorship of industry recognition events an added dimension beyond marketing - a visible presence in a sector where operators are under sustained financial and workforce pressure.

QTA chief executive Gary Mahon framed the appointment as recognition of a partner embedded in the industry it insures, rather than one operating at arm's length from it.

"NTI has been a valued and longstanding partner of QTA and, importantly, they understand this industry because they are genuinely part of it," Mahon said.

NTI Queensland state manager Jason Rogerson said the partnership reflected the insurer's broader approach to working alongside operators.

"Our partnership with QTA is about standing alongside the industry, listening to operators and supporting the people and businesses who keep Australia moving," Rogerson said.

Awards recognise safety, training and driver categories

The 2026 ceremony will present six awards: Industry Excellence, Trucking Woman of the Year, Professional Driver of the Year, Training & Skilling Excellence, Industry Safety & Innovation, and Young Achiever of the Year.

The Queensland Trucking Association, established in 1907, represents road freight operators across the state and holds the awards annually to recognise contributions to the sector. This year's ceremony will open with a truck display at the venue's Plaza forecourt before guests move into the ballroom.

For insurance brokers and underwriters working the transport and logistics book, the sponsorship is a reminder of how closely specialist insurers in this space tie their brand to operator-facing community events, alongside claims service and product design, as a point of differentiation in a niche and relationship-driven market.
