A professional body representing the actuarial profession in Australia has named a new president and leadership team.

Jenny Lyon takes on the role as president of the Actuaries Institute, and is joined by John Evans as senior vice president, and Nicolette Rubinsztein as vice president.

Lyon, a director of SKL Executive, a specialist actuarial recruiting firm, said she is committed to expanding the profession’s contribution in providing an independent voice on public policy, advising governments, and regulators on broad issues.

“A key strength of the profession is that it offers an independent voice that government and regulators can trust,” she said, stressing the actuaries’ capability in advising on complex issues.

Under her leadership, Lyon indicated that the Institute would be considering how big a role big data will play in determining policy and product development; and advising the federal Treasury on the development of comprehensive retirement income products.

Other issues she said the Institute would be focusing on include understanding the long- and short-term risks of climate change, the issues facing the finance and life insurance sector, and examining the complexities of insurance and mental health.
