Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS) has appointed Henning Haagen (pictured) to the role of chief underwriting officer of specialty and a member of the company’s board of management, subject to regulatory approval.

The appointment, which takes effect March 01, 2020, will see Haagen succeed Paul O’Neill, who left AGCS in 2019.

As chief underwriting officer, specialty, Haagen will take over responsibility for AGCS’s aviation, entertainment, marine, and mid-corporate lines of business. He will also oversee the AGCS Global Underwriting Integrity and Solutions function, as well as the AGCS Underwriting Academy. Haagen, who is a German citizen, will relocate from New York to Munich as part of his new responsibilities.

Haagen most recently served as AGCS’s regional head of specialty and Northeast Zone executive for North America – a role he had held since January 2017. AGCS said in a release that it would make another announcement at a later date regarding Haagen’s successor for his prior roles.

Before being regional head, Haagen was global head of aviation at AGCS. He has served a number of senior underwriting positions with the firm in Munich and London since joining in 2008. These include chief aviation officer for the EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions, global head of reinsurance, and head of aviation reinsurance underwriting.

Haagen has more than 20 years of underwriting experience, and previously worked as a senior underwriter for both GE Frankona Reinsurance AG and Augsburg Re. He began his insurance career working for Gerling Insurance and Reinsurance.

“We need strong focus on underwriting at board level, and Henning brings much experience in this area, with many years in the international specialty and reinsurance business,” said AGCS CEO Joachim Mueller.
