The 2018 Ron Shorter Public Speaking Award is now open for applications, the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) has announced.

This year, all young professionals (aged under 35) in life, general, reinsurance, and insurance law, across the country may send their applications to www.aila.com.au; and nominate an insurance-related topic they would like to speak on by May 4. Those who enter before April 6 will get the chance to win a $100 prepaid Visa card in a lucky draw.

Successful applicants will attend public speaking training workshops in Victoria, June 5; Queensland, June 12; and NSW, June 19, at 5pm at Colin Biggers & Paisley. The Western Australian workshop is at Kott Gunning at 5pm on June 26.

Invited applicants in South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory will join a workshop by videolink.

Workshop participants will receive training from Polaris Coaching, and then will give two-minute presentations on their topics. From the pool of participants from each location, three finalists will be selected to progress to the finals.

The finals in Victoria (July 19), NSW (July 26), and Queensland (Aug. 9) will take place at Colin Biggers & Paisley. Finalists from other states and territories will fly to their respective locations, with airfares and accommodation provided. The WA final is at Kott Gunning on Aug. 16.

At the finals, competitors will be given 10 minutes to speak on their topics for the grand prize.

State winners will receive economy airfares, two nights’ accommodation, and registration for the AILA National Conference, which will be held Oct. 31Nov. 2 in Perth; plus the honour of delivering their winning speeches at the conference. The WA winner receives a $750 Westfield gift card in lieu of an airfare. Finalists receive $250 Westfield gift cards.

Established in 2012, AILA's flagship public-speaking competition for young professionals in the insurance industry has so far provided more than 200 young professionals with public-speaking training and networking opportunities.
