Thomas Wills, project manager at Know Risk, talks promoting the insurance industry, why brokers should treat every customer like his business depends on it and explains why he really isn't a morning person.

How would you sum up insurance brokers in three words?
Essential, trusted, creative.

How would you change the industry?
I would make us better at promoting the good the industry does. It would be great to see more positive stories coming out about how insurance is helping people.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Be nice to everyone because you don’t know what they’ve got going on in their lives.

What’s the most important thing a broker can do to develop their business?
Treat every customer like your entire business depends on that one customer.

If you were Prime Minister for one day, what would you do?
Make it a public holiday. I’d rather be playing at home watching movies.

What’s the biggest challenge facing the industry today?
Lack of understanding of how insurance works, why it’s important and the consequences of not having it – all of which, not particularly coincidentally, Know Risk addresses through its comprehensive suite of tools and resources.

What has been the highlight of your career?
Being appointed Know Risk project manager. It’s great to be doing something that makes a difference.

What’s your favoured style of coffee?
Extra-large latte with one sugar. I usually follow that up with mid-morning Pepsi Max. Not a morning person.

NRL, AFL, soccer or other?
Pfft… soccer and NRL are not even real sports. I’m a die-hard Bombers supporter!

If you could invite three people to dinner, dead or alive, and excluding family and friends, who would they be and why?
James Hird so I could find out what’s really been going on down at Bomberland. Ricky Gervais and Seth McFarlane for comedic value.
