Brokers placing complex mining, power generation and onshore energy risks in Australia have a new senior counterpart on the claims side of those accounts. Charles Taylor has announced the apointment of Andrew Milne (pictured) as managing director for its Australian business, elevating a loss adjuster who has spent more than a decade handling the technically difficult claims that can most often test broker relationships when a large industrial loss occurs.
Charles Taylor provides loss adjusting services and complex technical claims management to the global insurance market. Its Australian operation adjusts claims across natural resources, heavy industry, onshore energy, mining, power generation and engineering, the lines where claim quantum is largest and settlement timelines longest.
The company said the appointment followed an internal succession process and reflected a long-term focus on developing talent from within the business.
For brokers, leadership changes at an adjusting firm matter for a practical reason: the adjuster appointed to a major industrial loss shapes how quickly quantum is agreed and how much of the claim survives scrutiny. Milne arrives in the role from the technical side of that work rather than from a purely commercial background.
"I am delighted to take on the role of Managing Director in Australia," Milne said. "Charles Taylor Australia has had a strong track record of delivering for our clients for more than 15 years and I am looking forward to continuing delivering quality service and greater value for our clients who need us during the most difficult of circumstances."
The Australian business has been built out substantially over the past five years, including a series of executive adjuster appointments across property, casualty and marine lines and further hires across the accounting services and liability teams. That expansion followed the appointment of Mark Thompson as regional head for Australia and New Zealand in 2022. Milne signalled his committment to sustrainable growth and high value service.
Milne has spent more than 11 years at Charles Taylor as part of its loss adjusting team, handling claims across the natural resources, heavy industry, onshore energy, mining, power generation and engineering divisions. In January 2024 he was named director of natural resources, a promotion the company attributed to his work on large and complex claims spanning upstream energy, green energy, and onshore energy and mining.
Stephen Thorpe, managing director for Charles Taylor Asia, framed the appointment as a bench-strength decision.
"Andrew has extensive experience in complex claims and a strong understanding of both our Australian business and the clients we support," said Thorpe. "His appointment also demonstrates the strength and depth of talent we have within Charles Taylor and our commitment to developing leaders from within the business."
