The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has welcomed two new non-executive directors to its board.

At its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 16, the ICA appointed Justin Delaney and Ram Kangatharan for 12-month terms, effective immediately.

New board members

Delaney has been the chief executive officer (CEO) of Zurich for Australia and New Zealand since July 2021. He has more than 25 years of experience in financial services with various senior executive roles.

Commenting on his appointment, Delaney said he was delighted to strengthen the ICA through his representation on the board.

“Zurich has a proud history of working closely with the ICA,” he said. “As the only major composite – life and general – insurer in the market, Zurich is in a unique position to understand the needs and issues affecting both individuals and businesses across the country. I look forward to sharing Zurich’s perspectives as we work together to shape positive outcomes for consumers, communities, and members.”

Ram Kangatharan is the group managing director and CEO of Auto & General for Asia-Pacific. He joined Auto & General in 2012 after spending five years at the Bank of Queensland, where he was the chief financial officer and then chief operating officer.

ICA president Nick Hawkins commented: “On behalf of the board, I am pleased both Justin and Ram have been able to join the board of the Insurance Council, and I welcome their expert contribution. The new appointments bring extensive experience in both general insurance and financial services to the board at what is a pivotal time for the general insurance industry.”

The ICA also bid farewell to outgoing Youi CEO Hugo Schreuder, who stepped down from the ICA board during the AGM.
