Liberty Mutual Re (LM Re), part of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has announced the appointment of Susan E. Burke (pictured) as vice president and director of assumed reinsurance in its casualty treaty department. Burke will be based in Stamford, Conn., and will report to Thomas Greene, head of US casualty for LM Re.

In her new role, Burke will be responsible for producing, underwriting and servicing a portfolio of casualty treaty reinsurance accounts. Prior to joining Liberty, Burke served as senior treaty underwriter at Swiss Re. She also served as vice president and claims expert at Swiss Re and claims manager and resident US counsel at the Gerling Group in Germany.

Burke began her career in the insurance unit of a major international law firm. She holds a juris doctorate from the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and an Associate in Reinsurance designation, while also being a member of the New York Bar.

“Susan’s background in general casualty classes makes her a tremendous addition to our team in Stamford,” said Dieter Winkel, president of Liberty Mutual Re. “Her knowledge of the business combined with her legal background will be an invaluable asset to Liberty Mutual Re and our clients.”
