Lockton newcomer Andrew Curl reveals goals in leadership role

Last week, industry veteran Andrew Curl was officially welcomed onto the Lockton Australia team, taking up a senior position as national manager of corporate.

Curl has close to 30 years’ experience under his belt, and joins the firm most recently from AEI Insurance, where he was a divisional manager of major risks.

“It sounds cliched, but I want to use my experience to help deliver world class solutions to our clients,” Sydney-based Curl told Insurance Business.

Having worked both locally and internationally, Curl is among the most experienced corporate brokers currently operating in Australia, boasting lengthy stints at JLT, Austbrokers, and Aon.

Of course, with so much time spent in the field, Curl has seen countless market shifts. The biggest, he says, is the drop in primary providers.

“Ignoring the cyclical nature of the market, which is ‘normal’, the biggest difference in market conditions is the number of insurers as result of consolidation and M&A activity,” he said. “There are simply fewer insurers now compared to when I started, meaning less choice for policyholders.”

Commenting on the recent move to Lockton Australia, Curl said the firm’s culture and organisational structure had played a key role in the switch.

“Lockton Australia was very attractive to me because the business has a flat management structure and encourages an entrepreneurial approach to service delivery, based on some fundamental principles that closely align with my own,” he said.

“I’d like to do my bit in helping the business grow and to attract and retain talent well into the future in order to ensure we are an employer of choice in a thriving broking sector.”
