The National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA) has announced that Graham “Bear” Stevens, a long-standing Victorian NIBA member and fellow, as well as the director of Edgewise Insurance Brokers, passed away on Friday, May 6.

Stevens was a highly experienced and respected insurance leader who spent decades in the insurance broking industry. He worked both in the international broking arena, and ran his own brokerage business, Edgewise Insurance Brokers, where he was a director for the past 15-years. He also served as a board member of Steadfast Group from 1996 to 2012.

In 2007, Stevens joined the NIBA board, where he served for 15 years until February 2022, and was the winner of the 2020 Lex McKeown award. He was the NIBA president for two years and later took on the role of president of the World Federation of Insurance Intermediaries (WFII) in 2016, reflecting his professional standing and the Australian insurance broking profession.

In a statement, NIBA said: “Graham is known in the industry as a guide and mentor to many and took great pride in always being available to his clients, no matter where he was in the world.”

Stevens is survived by his wife Norma, daughters Rachel and Melinda, and two granddaughters – who requested that those who want to express their sympathy consider donating directly to the Olivia Newton-John Centre in his name in lieu of flowers.

A private funeral will be held later this month with a celebration of his life with more details to be advised.
