QBE Insurance has recruited a former Allianz leader to drive and develop the firm's vision in the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector, in alignment with the broader business strategy.

Taking the newly-created role of head of SME for QBE's Australian and New Zealand operations is Aaron Gavin. He previously worked for Allianz, where he was most recently national underwriting manager for SME and person lines, broker, and agency commercial.

Gavin will take on his new role on March 5, reporting to Jason Clarke, executive general manager for intermediary distribution.

Clarke said QBE tapped Gavin to the role to build on the momentum the insurer has already made in the SME space, which not only represents a significant share of its existing portfolio, but is also an area of focus for growth.

Gavin “brings with him a wealth of experience from more than 20 years in the insurance industry, and is an experienced leader with a deep understanding of the SME market,” Clarke said. “He has extensive portfolio-management experience with a strong track record of delivering profitable growth in various product lines, as well as claims-management experience within personal lines. Aaron also has a global perspective, having spent two-and-a-half years working in Europe, driving the implementation of best practices in pricing and underwriting.”
