Zurich Australian Insurance has tapped an experienced industry leader with nearly three decades of underwriting experience to head its motor and marine business in Australia and New Zealand.

Matthew O’Sullivan will take on the new role of head of motor and marine for Australia and New Zealand, after serving as Zurich’s head of marine for Australia and New Zealand and Zurich’s Asia-Pacific marine lead. He has been Zurich’s acting head of motor since April 2019.

“When you have an individual of Matt’s calibre, with his experience and energy, it’s a straightforward decision to bring two complementary business lines together under his leadership,” said Sean Walker, chief underwriting officer of general insurance. “We regard Zurich’s commercial motor insurance proposition as our ‘jewel in the crown’ and we are proud that so many Australian and New Zealand organisations rely on the protection we offer. I look forward to working with Matt to evolve Zurich’s offering and cement our place as one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading commercial motor insurers.”

“Matt’s appointment as head of motor and marine is a fantastic outcome for our customers and brokers who will experience the continuity, consistency, and stability that Matt will bring to our marine and motor propositions,” said Tim Plant, CEO of general insurance.

O’Sullivan joined Zurich in 2014 as head of marine, property and engineering lines. Prior to joining Zurich, he held senior underwriting and account management roles with Aon Benfield and Munich Re.
