Insurance Australia Group (IAG) has mobilised its support network in response to the devastating storms and flooding that have hit the east coast of Australia.

This initiative includes deploying claims teams, assessors, and builders to aid those affected by the severe weather events.

Since the storms began, IAG has processed over 3,100 insurance claims, with the majority – approximately 80% – pertaining to property damages. The most affected regions are located in New South Wales (NSW), specifically the Hawkesbury-Nepean and Illawarra areas.

How does IAG help customers impacted by east coast storms?

IAG executive general manager of claims Luke Gallagher reported that the company's assessors and affiliated repairers have initiated damage assessments and emergency repairs for affected properties.

“We have deployed our NRMA Insurance Mobile Claims HELP Response Vehicle to the Hawkesbury-Nepean region to help customers lodge their claims and receive emergency support at a location convenient to them. From [yesterday], the NRMA Insurance HELP Response Vehicle [has been] located at Richmond Club, 6E Market Street, Richmond,” he said. “We also have another HELP Response Vehicle based in the Wollongong region at the Bulli Community Centre, 328 Princess Highway, Bulli, from [today] (Tuesday 9 April).”

IAG's call centres for NRMA Insurance, CGU, and WFI remain operational 24/7 to assist with claim filing, emergency repair coordination, temporary housing arrangements for severely impacted customers, and emergency fund disbursement.

IAG's advice for storm-affected customers

Gallagher encouraged customers to utilise the online claim submission process for NRMA Insurance, CGU, and WFI brands, assuring them of the company's readiness to access policy details and expedite the claim process.

“Impacted customers can easily lodge their claims online for our NRMA Insurance, CGU, and WFI brands. You don't need to be at home or have a copy of your policy to lodge your claim – we will have your details,” he said.

Homeowners dealing with water damage are advised to photograph damaged belongings as part of their cleanup efforts before disposal. This step is crucial even before an assessor visits, to facilitate the claims process.

By Monday, the total claims received by IAG had risen to 3,169, signifying the extensive impact of the flooding.

IAG has offered guidance for homeowners impacted by the floods, including waiting for emergency services' clearance before returning to properties, documenting damage for insurance claims, and removing water-damaged items, all while keeping a record of important details for replacement.

IAG was among the major insurance companies that addressed parliament inquiry on the industry's response to the 2022 floods.
