Suncorp Group (Suncorp) is hoping to create a mentally healthy workplace for its employees by teaming up with Black Dog Institute, a mental health research institution.

“With one in five of us experiencing symptoms of mental illness symptoms in any given year, it’s vital that our people feel supported if they’re facing mental health challenges,” said Fiona Thompson, group executive for people, culture & advocacy at Suncorp.

Mental health in the workplace

Since January 2023, Suncorp leaders have joined Black Dog Institute’s interactive workshop to learn the skills required to support their teams’ mental health.

Black Dog Institute’s latest research revealed that evidence-based mental health training can have a long-lasting positive impact on the workforce.

“Organisations that implement programs to support managers and employees can reduce absenteeism, help employees return to work after periods of mental illness, reduce staff turnover, as well as retain and attract talent by actively promoting wellbeing,” said Tasman Cassim of Black Dog Institute.

Cassim further explained that partnerships with companies enable the institute to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it is needed most.

“Suncorp Group shares Black Dog Institute’s vision for a mentally healthier world,” Cassim said. “Suncorp Group recognises that supporting mental health is more important than ever, this commitment to better outcomes starts from the very top. By investing in science, compassion, and action, Black Dog Institute and Suncorp Group are protecting what matters and are committed supporting a mentally healthier future.”
