Eight years ago, just getting an appointment to see the board of the New Zealand Heavy Haulage Association (NZHHA) was a ‘major effort’ for Rothbury Wilkinson manager corporate risks and Lloyd’s cover holder Conrad Shanly.

But through a combination of determination, proving he would go the extra mile and demonstrating he was actually a ‘pretty reasonable bloke’, Shanly is now being given exceptional recognition by the NZHHA.

Shanly received the Chairman’s Award at the recent NZHHA conference in Christchurch for outstanding service and assistance to NZHHA and its members.

Paul Britton, NZHHA former chairman, admitted he did not even want to be introduced to Shanly eight years ago.

“It would be fair to say that I didn’t really want to even know this guy when he was first introduced to me and the rest of the board,” Britton told conference delegates. “Now I think he is a pretty reasonable bloke.”

Britton commended Shanly and Rothbury Wilkinson for going the extra mile in providing broking services to NZHHA: “Since 2008 his organisation has been a regular sponsor and attendee at our conferences.
Since then he has developed customised insurance packages for both the house moving and pilot sectors and is also now the Association’s insurance broker.”

Britton particularly lauded Shanly and Rothbury Wilkinson for their unpaid work to NZHHA, and said the award was a way for them to express their gratitude: “He has been willing to contribute his own and his company’s time towards the analysis of specific insurance issues for the Association on behalf of the industry. And, following on from that, he has sought legal opinions from his company’s lawyer on various matters raised by the Association at no cost to us.”

“Last year at our conference in Wellington, he provided the lawyers who spoke to the incoming health and safety legislation and at our Tauranga conference brought along former All Black and Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder to speak… again at no cost to the Association. More recently he has been instrumental in introducing the house removal sector to Heartland Bank to help with financing of our removal customers.”

Shanly, who agreed that it was a major effort for him to talk with NZHHA eight years ago, said the award reflected a “significant change in their [NZHHA] perception.”

He said he was greatly honoured by the awards and pleased that he and his firm had been able to be of service to NZHHA on their insurance and legal matters.
