League-playing brokers and insurers will face off on Friday 7 August at Auckland’s Victoria Park for the fourth annual State of Insurance tournament.

The broker teams are keen to break their opponents’ winning streak this year after the insurers’ three consecutive wins to date.

The broker Wolfpack team has a new captain – Crombie Lockwood’s Cedric Suifua – who said he had big boots to fill.

“I was very humbled and surprised at the appointment,” Suifua told Insurance Business.

“I have huge boots to fill with Tony and Bully stepping down as team captains.

“This year I plan to lead from the front. I was nursing a number of injuries last year and am still recovering from my second shoulder surgery but I am gunning to make an impact on the field!”

Suifua said trainings had now started and the team line-up including an Irishman keen to transfer his all-star hurling skills and a few new recruits with a solid touch background.

The insurer Spartans team will be captained by QBE underwriter Andriu Sucu, who takes over from Henry Wallace.

“It goes without saying I have some big boots (and small shorts) to fill taking over the leadership from Henry this year,” Sucu said.

He said the squad was pretty similar to last year’s line-up but he admitted he had his work cut out for him: “I just want to be able to lift that shield again on 7 August and with the broker squad looking stronger again this year getting the Spartan army motivated will be my main goal this year.

“We will take the same approach into the event this year – a couple of trainings, a couple of cheeky plays and then just hope it comes together on the day.”

Sponsors for the event so far include NZI, Vero, QBE, Star Insurance, Crombie Lockwood, Insureze, JB Hi fi, Jones Fee, AMN Master Glaziers, Kennedys, AIG, DLA Piper NZ, McElroys, Bonded, Indie Assessors and Fortune Manning.

The afternoon kicks off with the over 35s at 3pm and consists of two 20 minute halves. The main game will kick off at 4pm and will have four 15 minute quarters.

Prize giving will commence at 6pm followed by an after function for all players and sponsors.

Supporters must purchase tickets for the after party for $30 prior to the event, which is to be held at Foxes Bar at the Viaduct.
