Ando Insurance has appointed Mike Bodman (pictured) as its new head of marine, the insurer announced on LinkedIn on Thursday.
The company highlighted that Bodman brings more than 20 years of experience in marine insurance, including leadership positions at AIG across the US, covering underwriting, strategy, and distribution.
Before entering insurance, Bodman worked as a marine engineer, including a role at Alloy Yachts in New Zealand.
“This marks an exciting next chapter for Ando’s Marine business – built on strong foundations,” the company said. “With over 100 years of combined experience across the team, and a clear focus on disciplined growth, technical strength, and meaningful market engagement, brokers can have confidence in our capability, delivery, and underwriting excellence.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Bodman spent more than 12 years at AIG in progressively senior roles. He was underwriting manager for global marine in New Zealand, before taking a series of Boston-based senior positions: assistant vice president and marine manager, vice president and regional marine manager, and vice president and east region manager.
In his new Auckland-based role, operating on a hybrid arrangement, Bodman holds “overall responsibility for the performance, direction, and evolution of Ando’s Marine portfolio,” leading a team of underwriters with more than 110 years of combined experience.
“I’m excited and energized to play a pivotal role in shaping broker engagement, market positioning and strategic growth,” he said.
The appointment comes amid a period of change at Ando. In September, the company named Therese Singleton as its incoming CEO, succeeding co-founder John Lyon, who moved into the newly created role of executive chair of the board.
Singleton joined Ando in March 2022 and has since overseen several operational functions and strategic projects. Her previous experience includes serving as CEO of Resolution Life New Zealand.
The leadership transition followed a broader corporate development earlier that year. The Envest Group, part of The Ardonagh Group, completed its acquisition of a significant stake in Ando, which has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading managing general agents, handling over NZ$500m in gross written premium across personal and commercial lines.
