International law firm Hill Dickinson has made two senior hires for its Hong Kong office. Marine insurance law experts Edward Liu and Anthony Cowie have both joined the firm effective October 22.

Liu, a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and a lawyer in mainland China, joins the team as counsel from Reed Smith Richards Butler after eight years as part of its shipping litigation team. In December 2017, he was named by Lloyd’s List as a top five leader in the ‘Next Generation in Shipping’ and recommended as a ‘leading heavyweight lawyer of the future’.

His practice covers all areas of maritime and commercial law, including charter party and shipbuilding contract disputes, MOA matters, cargo claims, general average, marine insurance and sale of goods disputes. He handles a wide variety of cases under LMAA terms and HKIAC-administered arbitration rules.

Cowie also joins Hill Dickinson as a counsel. He is an England and Wales and Hong Kong qualified lawyer with considerable experience in Asia, having worked in private practice with Reed Smith Richards Butler and Howse Williams Bowers, as well as in-house with a leading shipbroker, and more recently as head of legal and insurance for one of the leading ship managers.

He has a wide range of experience across several sectors, including shipping, financial services, technology, medical services and equipment, and media and entertainment.

“I’m delighted to be welcoming Edward and Antony to the team,” said Damien Laracy, principal of Hill Dickinson Hong Kong. “Edward brings with him more than eight years’ experience to the role and will be a great addition to our shipping practice and Antony’s practical industry experience will be a significant asset for both our shipping and corporate clients.”
