A former Suncorp executive has taken the role of chief strategy and customer officer at MetLife Australia.

Gerard McDermott joined MetLife Australia from EML where he was workers’ compensation group executive. Prior to that he was head of general insurance at BT Financial Group and held senior leadership roles at Suncorp spanning 11 years, the most recent being executive general manager for personal insurance distribution.

As MetLife’s chief strategy and customer officer, McDermott will lead the firm’s strategy, project management office, customer, digital, marketing, and data functions, reporting to Vince Watt, acting chief executive, Financial Standard reported.

Watt replaces Deanne Stewart, who will become the chief executive of First State Super when incumbent Michael Dwyer steps down in November.

Watt said McDermott’s extensive track record of driving customer-led business transformations will enable him to contribute significantly to MetLife Australia, Financial Standard reported.
